Merit Badge Midway 2012

The Merit Badge Midway will be held on the first three Saturday’s in February 2012 in Ottensman Hall at the UW-Platteville campus. The dates are February 4, 11, 18 with a snow date of February 25. If a weekend is canceled by snow, the leaders will be emailed from Dennis Palmer and local radio stations will be notified. Typically this is done the day before.

The Arrowhead District of the Blackhawk Council of the Boy Scouts of America, together with the Sugar River Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever invite you to the “Call of the Wild” Spring Camporee at Savanna Springs and the Argyle Rod & Gun Club May 13, 14, 15, 2011.

Most of the camporee events will take place on Saturday May 14 between Savanna Springs, which is owned by the Wisnefske’s, (Arrowhead Activity Chair and local Pheasants Forever leader) and the Argyle Rod and Gun Club about 3 miles east of Argyle, Wisconsin. Camping sites will be available Fri & Sat.  The BSA district will be offering the Outdoor part of Leadership Training. This event is meant for Arrowhead Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts and their guests.  Also welcome are troops outside the district, & the youth committees & members of Pheasants Forever Chapters who bring interested youth  Our local chapter is inviting our members & interested youth, girls and guys, especially from Monroe/Argyle interested in outdoor activities. The Sat. program that begins at 9am-5 includes visits to certain sites that are areas of interest:

  • THE TROUT POND learn to tie a fly, use a fly rod, and try to catch a big trout for supper
  • THE BEAVER DAM learn about Taxidermy, Pelts, Trapping and Water Quality at a real Beaver Pond.
  • PRAIRIE FIRE hike through a native prairie/savanna, plant some prairie,  Watch a controlled prairie burn.
  • THE GREAT OAK visit one of the biggest oaks in the state,  GPS and GEO cache
  • IN THE BLIND Turkey, Duck and Deer calling, Archery and Tree Stand Safety
  • AT THE SHED Dutch Oven Cooking, raptors & falconry
  • THE ROD & GUN CLUB Hunters Safety, Trap Shooting, Gun Cleaning, Archery and much more
  • MORNING OR AFTERNOON CANOE TRIPS FROM ARGYLE TO BLOODY LAKE AT BLACKHAWK PARK???

Meals will be available.  Exact costs of the program and meals are not yet available but will be subsidized by the Sugar River Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever and Argyle Rod & Gun Club.  Details of the Sunrise and Evening program on Saturday are incomplete but may include a 5K trail run, “Greenfire” Presentation, bird watch walk, Star Gazing or even a youth turkey hunt and possibly something Native American.

Bacon and Cheese Hash Browns

Packaging Instructions

Step One

1. Gallon zip bag
2. Add 7 ounces dried hash brown potatoes (by weight)
3. Add 2 Tbsp bacon bits (or ham TVP)

Step Two

1. Quart zip bag
2. Add 4 Tbsp cheddar cheese mix
3. Add 4 Tbsp instant dry milk
4. Add 2 Tbsp creamer
5. Seal small bag into the larger bag

Preparation Instructions

1. Empty the large bag into a pan
2. Add 4 cups of water
3. Put on stove, cover, bring to boil
4. Reduce heat and simmer 2 minutes, stirring occasionally
5. Stir in the contents of the small bag and mix well
6. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes

Sloppy Joe (Bar-B-Q)

This is a backpacking recipe by John Weber.

Packaging Instructions

1. Gallon zip bag
2. Add 2 Tbsp beef soup base to bag
3. Add 1 package Sloppy Joe flavoring mix
4. Add 1 Tbsp brown sugar
5. Add 6 Tbsp tomato powder
6. Add 1 Tbsp dried onion
7. Add 1/4 tsp black pepper
8. Add 1 Tbsp tomato flakes (optional)
9. Add 1 1/2 cups TVP
10. Add small bag with six packages ketchup

Preparation Instructions

1. Add 3 cups water in a pan
2. Set on stove, cover, bring to boil
3. Empty bag into pan
4. Mix well
5. Squeeze in the ketchup
6. Stir well
7. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes

Sausage Flavored Hash Browns

This is a backpacking recipe by John Weber.

Packaging Instructions

Step One

1. Gallon zip bag

This is a backpacking recipe by John Weber.

Packaging Instructions

1. Box of Chicken Lo Mein dinner mix
2. Gallon zip bag
3. Open box, pour pasta and sauce mix into bag
4. Add 1 Tbsp chicken soup base mix
5. Add 1 Tbsp brown sugar
6. Add 1/2 cup dried peas
7. Add 3/4 cup chicken TVP

Preparation Instructions

1. Empty contents of bag into pan
2. Add 3 cups water
3. Mix well
4. Set on stove, cover and bring to boil
5. Reduce heat and simmer 8 minutes
6. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes

Cheesy Chicken Pasta

This is a backpacking recipe by John Weber.

Packaging Instructions

1. Box of cheesy pasta tuna helper
2. Gallon zip bag
3. Open box, pour pasta and sauce mix into bag
4. Add 1 Tbsp chicken soup base mix
5. Add 3 ounces pasta (by weight)
6. Add 3 Tbsp dry milk
7. Add 2 Tbsp creamer
8. Add 2 Tbsp cheese powder
9. Add 1 Tbsp powder buttermilk mix
10. Add 3/4 cup chicken TVP

Preparation Instructions

1. Empty package into pan
2. Add 4 1/2 cups water
3. Mix well
4. Set on stove, cover, bring to boil
5. educe heat and simmer 10 minutes
6. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes

Beef Stroganoff

This is a backpacking recipe by John Weber.

Packaging Instructions

1. One box Stroganoff dinner mix
2. Gallon zip bag
3. Open box, pour macaroni into plastic bag
4. Open sauce package, pour into plastic bag
5. Add 1 Tbsp beef soup base mix
6. Add 3 ounces pasta (by weight)
7. Add 3 Tbsp dry milk
8. Add 2 Tbsp creamer
9. Add 1 Tbsp powdered buttermilk
10. Add 3/4 cup TVP

Preparation Instructions

1. Empty package into pan
2. Add 4 1/2 cups water
3. Mix well
4. Set on stove, cover, bring to boil
5. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes
6. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes

2. 1 box chicken flavored rice dinner mix
3. Open box, pour into plastic bag
4. Add 1 Tbsp chicken soup base
5. Add 3 ounces rice (by weight)
6. Add 1/4 cup dried peas
7. Add 1/4 cup dried carrots
8. Add 1 Tbsp dried onion
9. Add 3/4 cup chicken TVP
